LLOYD POWELL NAMED BRENHAM PD’S FULL-TIME CHIEF; CURTISS SCHOEN PROMOTED TO ASST. CHIEF

The City of Brenham has officially named Lloyd Powell as chief of the Brenham Police Department.

Lloyd Powell speaks to the Brenham City Council on
Thursday upon his promotion to full-time chief of
the Brenham Police Department.

At today’s (Thursday) Brenham City Council meeting, City Manager Carolyn Miller announced the removal of the “interim” tag from Powell’s title, making him the full-time chief after he had served in the role on a temporary basis since the retirement of former chief Ron Parker in March.  He also served as the department’s acting chief while Parker was on medical leave last year.

Powell said he is immensely grateful for the chance to lead the department.

A 1992 graduate of Brenham High School, Powell first joined the department in August 1997, becoming captain in August 2015 and earning a promotion to assistant chief in June 2023.

Miller said Powell has worked to strengthen the department’s proactive policing by reinstating the Crime Reduction Unit and implementing a highway enforcement and traffic team to patrol, enforce and maintain safe driving habits.  She also said Powell and his command staff have worked to identify replacement hardware and software for the department’s new body camera and in-car camera systems.

Powell said he would not be where he is today without Lieutenants Kelvin Raven and Curtiss Schoen, calling them both men of integrity and good hearts.  He then turned the podium over to Schoen as he announced his promotion to Assistant Police Chief.

Schoen has served in the department for 18 years as part of multiple divisions, including as a member of the SWAT team, negotiations team and head of the drone unit.  Powell said, “It should be the goal of every leader to find another leader that is better than they are.  I feel like, in this situation, I have done just that.”

Schoen said it is a great honor to have this bestowed upon him.

Mayor Atwood Kenjura said the city is very fortunate to have “true, outstanding leadership”, adding that with Powell, Raven and Schoen on the staff, “we are truly blessed.”
