According to the City of Brenham, a company drilling a water well hit a pocket of hydrogen sulfide and an oil pocket at 9920 Oil Field Road.  The city’s notice on social media went out around 6:45 p.m.

A shelter-in-place order went out for a mile around the affected area, but no evacuations were ordered.

City of Brenham Communications and Public Relations Manager Melinda Gordon said around 7:15 p.m. that crews were able to pump mud into the well and plug the wellhead.  Gas numbers read at zero, so the shelter-in-place was lifted.

The Brenham Fire Department and Washington County Office of Emergency Management were among the agencies called out.  College Station hazmat crews also responded.

  1. I live on Salem Rd. so this was a concern. It would have been great if whomever posted the plume model would have put the orientation of the plume so that it would be clear if we were in the direction of the leak.
