BRENHAM CUBETTE SOFTBALL BATTLES IN AREA PLAYOFF, FALLS JUST SHORT TO NEDERLAND
The Brenham Cubettes season came to an end Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3 game series to the Nederland Bulldogs 2 games to 1. The Cubettes forced a third and decisive third game after dropping game 1 of the series Thursday night by a final score of 4-3. After a rainout Friday Night, the matchup was rescheduled for an 11:00 start time Saturday morning. The Cubettes were facing elimination and needed to win game 2 to force a 3rd game later in the day.
The Cubettes got off to an aggressive start in the top of the 1st inning, with first 3 batters for the Cubettes reaching base to start the game. With the bases loaded and no body out, McKenzie Tieman hit a fly ball to center field for the first out of the inning, but Avery Maurer would tag up at third and score the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly, giving the Cubettes a 1-0 early lead. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Reese Robins for Nederland lead off the inning with a double and came around to score on a single by Sophia Livingston, tying the game up at 1 a piece. After that Cubettes starting pitcher, Kiley Baker, settled in and didn’t allow another Nederland hit for the rest of the game. Baker pitched all 7 innings for Brenham, striking out 5 and only allowing 1 run. The Cubettes would retake the lead in the top of the 3rd inning after a 2 out double by Tieman followed by a single by Kinsey Antkowiak that drove her in making it 2-1. The Cubettes would open the game up in the top of the 6th inning, when Nederland starting pitcher, Morgan Barron, seemingly lost control of her pitches walking the first 3 batters of the inning. After a one out walk that brought the 3rd run in for the Cubettes, Brenham left fielder, Sarah Mabie, stepped up to the plate and drilled a ball to straight away center clearing the 210 marker at the fence for a grand slam home run putting Brenham up 7-1. The Cubettes would load the bases again in the 6th, batting through the entire line up, and eventually chase off Barron. Kaylee Baker would come on in relief and hit the first batter she faced, Alden Jaks, allowing the runner from 3rd, McKenzie Tieman, to score, giving the Cubettes an 8-1 lead, and what would end up being the final score and would force a 3rd and final game in the series, with the series now tied at 1 game each.

In the second game of the double header and third game of the series, it was a win or go home situation for both teams. The Cubettes would start the game off with a lead off double by Avery Mauer, but the inning would end with her stranded at 2nd base. In the bottom of the second inning Nederland’s first baseman, Grace Seigrist would hit a home run to right field to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. The game would remain close as both starting pitchers from the previous game dualed it out from the pitching circle, neither pitching giving an inch until the bottom of the 4th inning when Nederland capitalized on 3 walks along with some fielding mistakes by the Brenham defense. Nederland would send all 9 batters to the plate scoring 4 runs on 2 hits with the Cubettes committing 2 errors. Nederland would hold on to a 5-0 lead for the rest of the game and the Cubettes season would come to an end. The Bulldogs will advance in the playoffs to face Pflugerville Weiss in the Regional Semi Finals next week.
