WASHINGTON COUNTY ALL-STARS CLINCH SPOT IN MINOR LEAGUE SOFTBALL FINAL

On Saturday, the Washington County Little League All-Stars faced Columbus in the Winner’s Bracket of the Minor Softball Tournament at B&PW Park in Sealy and came away with a hard-fought 6-4 victory.

Washington County struck first in the top of the second inning, capitalizing on back-to-back bases-loaded walks drawn by Lonna Wunderlich and Callie Dismukes to take a 2-0 lead. Columbus quickly responded in the bottom half, tying the game on an error and a bases-loaded walk of their own.

In the third, Columbus pulled ahead with a rare inside-the-park home run from Bree Krpec, making it 3-2. But Washington County answered right back in the top of the fourth when Lillie Landua delivered a clutch RBI double on an 0-2 count to bring home Paisley Meyer and even the score at 3-3.

The momentum continued in the fifth inning. Teagyn Wilson came through with a two-RBI single, and Meyer followed with a productive groundout that plated another run, giving Washington County a 6-3 advantage.

Kinsley Haferkamp came in to relieve Landua in the bottom of the fifth and wasted no time, retiring the side in order to preserve the lead. Though Washington County couldn’t add insurance in the sixth, Haferkamp closed out the game, allowing just one run on one hit and one walk, sealing the 6-4 win.

The victory sends Washington County to the championship game on Monday - once again facing Columbus, who earned a rematch by defeating Bellville on Sunday. Washington County needs just one win to claim the title, while Columbus must win twice to take the crown.
