BRENHAM PARKS & REC BOARD GRANTS USAGE AGREEMENT FOR JACKSON ST. PARK PICKLEBALL COURTS

The Brenham Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on Wednesday approved a reservation agreement with the local pickleball league for usage of the new pickleball courts at Jackson Street Park.

With the agreement, the Brenham Pickleball Club will be allowed semi-exclusive usage of eight of the 10 pickleball courts for league play year-round, between the hours of 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.  The other two courts will remain open for public use during those times and will be labeled with signage.

City of Brenham Public Works Director Dane Rau said the current situation is a “good problem to have” with how much use the courts are getting, and he looks forward to having everyone come out to enjoy them.

The city’s original reservation use agreement with the club was created in October 2024 and applied to the six older courts.  A new agreement was needed, now that the four new courts are open for play.  A ribbon cutting will be held at the park on Tuesday at 3 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the new courts and several other park improvements.

As with other clubs and organizations like Washington County Little League and the Brenham Youth Football League, the pickleball group pays player fees to reimburse the city for use of facilities.  The pickleball club has over 200 members.

In other business, the board agreed on tightening up rules and regulations for renting the Dr. Bobbie M. Dietrich Memorial Amphitheatre at Hohlt Park.  Rau said the changes are coming as a result of some complaints and negative interactions regarding rentals at the amphitheatre.  He added that the facility was not intended to be used as an ongoing rental, and that the city wants to get back to what the facility was originally designed for: enhancing education and visual arts for the community.
