BURTON SCHOOL BOARD AUTHORIZES EMERGENCY UNDERGROUND PLUMBING REPAIRS
The Burton School Board on Monday agreed to execute a contract for emergency repairs, after the recent discovery of underground plumbing issues.
Superintendent Vikki Curry told trustees that last week, Burton ISD maintenance officials and representatives from Moeller Plumbing responded to a pipe that burst in the library area. The pipe has been repaired, but during their evaluation, Moeller Plumbing found two minor breaks beneath the high school gym that will need fixing.
Curry said the work will require digging underneath the gym building. She said the issues could affect the bond construction project if left unattended.
Curry said the district would normally go out for bids, but since this situation is more time-sensitive, quicker action is necessary.
Once crews dig underneath the gym, the breaks will be temporarily sealed so that the gym can continue to be used through the spring semester. The plan is to line up the project with fair week, so that work on the pipes can be done while students are out.
Curry said permanent repairs are planned in the summer, once nearby construction work is close to wrapping up. The project will involve accessing the pipes from inside the gym, which will temporarily close the facility for 2-4 weeks.
Specific cost figures were not shared at the meeting, but Curry estimated that the boring of the tunnels alone could cost between $20,000 - $40,000.
During an update on the school bond project, Weaver and Jacobs Constructors Project Manager Ryan Malinovsky said after re-sequencing work in the kitchen and cafeteria, the revised target date to have them complete is October 6th. He cautioned that it will still be tight and will not be an easy date to hit, but is achievable.
The board also approved an annual agreement designating Washington County Extension Agents as adjunct staff members and tabled action on nominations for the Washington County Appraisal District Board of Directors.
