Hosted by the Washington County Veterans Association, the program recognized veterans for their contributions and paid tribute to those who have passed on.
The keynote speech was delivered by retired Colonel Mark McClelland, who served in the Air Force Reserves from 1972 to 2009.
McClelland said war is ugly, but having no one willing to fight or nothing worth fighting for is worse. He said servicemembers recognize their duty to fight and be prepared to die for the freedoms that American citizens hold.
McClelland said no matter where the members of the armed forces hail from, they all share a unique and everlasting bond.
Local dignitaries who spoke were County Judge John Durrenberger, Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura, Burton Mayor Karen Buck and State Senator Lois Kolkhorst. The ceremony ended with the ringing of the bell and the playing of “Taps”.
A barbecue chicken and pork sausage meal was served after the conclusion of the program. Proceeds from the meal supported Washington County veterans groups.
McClelland’s full presentation can be heard below.
