SPACEX COULD BE BRINGING FACILITY TO GRIMES CO.
Grimes County Commissioners have called a public hearing next month regarding a possible development led by Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, also known as SpaceX.
The meeting on Wednesday, June 3rd will have commissioners considering approval of a property tax abatement agreement and the designation of a reinvestment zone, which would be located at the Gibbons Creek Reservoir, about 20 miles east of College Station.
According to the meeting notice, SpaceX is looking to build a “multi-phase, next-generation, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing fabrication facility.” The notice describes the project as a “transformative investment in domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity.”
Per the notice, the initial capital investment is estimated at $55 billion, with the potential to climb up to $119 billion if additional phases are built.
Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth told KBTX that the facility could use up to 5,000 acres of land at the reservoir and roughly 3,000 acres of surface water, adding that the project could expand into nearby areas.
Musk, in a social media response to a post about the project, said Grimes County is “one of several locations under consideration for what will be the largest and most advanced chip fabrication facility in the world.”
The meeting on June 3rd will be held at 9 a.m. at the Grimes County Justice and Business Center in Anderson.
