After the May primary runoff, KWHI reached out to Dismukes and the office of County Judge John Durrenberger to ask if there had been any changes to the previously announced plans to swear Dismukes into office in the summer, rather than waiting until the new year.

Today (Thursday), the county responded with a press release announcing that Dismukes is set to be sworn in on Friday, August 28th.  Dismukes, who defeated Gil Janner in the March Republican primary and will be unopposed in the November election, will serve out the remainder of Kirk Hanath’s unexpired term through 2028.

Hanath resigned as Precinct 3 Commissioner in order to run for County Judge, but has continued to serve in the commissioner’s role in a holdover capacity.  Hanath defeated Brad Tegeler in the May Republican primary runoff for the county judge’s seat and will not have an opponent come November, so Hanath will fill the seat coming open at the end of County Judge John Durrenberger’s term.

Dismukes has work obligations as the Assistant Fire Chief of Operations for the Katy Fire/EMS Department, and he said the department has been making “slow but progressive progress” in securing replacements both for his role and that of the retired fire chief.

Meanwhile, Precinct 2 Commissioner-elect Jim Chisolm, who defeated Mark Schonefeld in the May Republican primary runoff and will not be opposed in November, is on track to be sworn into office on January 1, 2027 after the completion of Candice Bullock’s term.  Chisolm will receive the oath of office alongside the county’s other officials elected this year.

As county budget workshops opened this week, Dismukes said he has been kept in the loop and plans on attending some of the meetings in the coming weeks.  The county said in its release that Chief of Staff Carrie Marmol has been working with Dismukes and Chisolm to keep them informed throughout the budget process through involvement in discussions and workshops.  Durrenberger said preparing the incoming commissioners is “an important part of ensuring continuity in county government”, adding, “By involving them in the budget process and ongoing county operations, we are helping provide a smooth transition while continuing to serve the citizens of Washington County with transparency and good stewardship.”
