FAYETTE COUNTY TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO TWO DRUG ARRESTS

Deputy Cody Williams (Fayette County Sheriff's Office)

Two San Antonio people found themselves in the Fayette County Jail after a traffic stop led to the discovery of methamphetamines.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports on Saturday just before 11pm, Deputy Cody Williams conducted a traffic stop on a dark colored Nissan SUV.

The vehicle was traveling west bound on I-10 at Mile Marker 664 near Flatonia.

Deputy Williams made contact with the driver, 24-year-old Roland Champion Jr., and the passenger, 22-year-old Emily Guadalupe Mendoza.

During the traffic stop, it was learned that Champion did not possess a driver’s license. Champion and Mendoza also had inconsistencies in their travel timeline.

Deputy Williams requested consent to search the vehicle, but Champion denied consent. Officer Byron Powe with the Schulenburg Police Department arrived on scene and deployed K-9 Officer Semper to conduct a free-air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle.

Officer Powe advised that Semper alerted him to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle.

Deputy Williams conducted a probable-cause search of the vehicle and located a black trash bag behind the driver’s seat.

Inside the bag were nine bundles weighing 20.2 pounds, and containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamines.

Champion and Mendoza were arrested and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center in La Grange. They were both charged with Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance.
