Washington County officials say the 4th of July celebration at the Expo surpassed expectations.
Expo Director Harrison Williams gave a report to county commissioners today (Tuesday) on the Stars Over Washington County event, which featured a touch-a-truck experience with dozens of first responder and county fleet vehicles, a concert with the Journey tribute band Escape, and a fireworks show.
Williams said the county hoped to bring in 3,000 people to the event, but ended up drawing a crowd of roughly 4,600. He said while having 50 percent larger of a crowd than what was planned for did lead to some “trickle-down issues” like not having enough food vendors, the evening was still greatly enjoyed by locals and visitors to the area.
County Judge John Durrenberger said numerous residents from neighboring communities like Bellville, Hempstead and Giddings came out to Brenham for the festivities, and that the Expo was “packed”. Williams noted that the number of 4,600 only accounts for the people who came through the gates at the Expo and does not include those who stuck to the border properties and parking lots.
When asked if thought had been given to making the 4th of July event a recurring one, Williams expressed openness to the possibility and said he would want to get feedback from local partners on if that should be explored further.
Williams thanked all of the donors to the event, as well as County Engineer Wesley Stolz and the team at Engineering and Development Services for helping coordinate the touch-a-truck, calling it a “major success.”
