CUB FOOTBALL SEES SEVERAL BRIGHT SPOTS IN SCRIMMAGE AGAINST A&M CONSOLIDATED

Roland Branch Jr. (Melonie Rau)

The Brenham Cub Football Team took part in their only scrimmage last (Thursday) night against the A&M Consolidated Tigers at Cub Stadium.

The first part of the scrimmage focused on offense and defense with each team taking turns running a set number of plays against each other. Each drive started at the offense's own 30-yard line.

On their first drive, A&M Consolidated took the ball down the field and scored on a one-yard touchdown run by Gary Hall Jr.

For Brenham's first possession, Jakoby Dixon broke off a 42-yard run, and Roland Branch Jr. found Markell Lewis on an 18-yard pass. Those plays set up a six-yard touchdown run by C.J. Glover.

On the Cubs' next drive, Ledrick Walker Jr. had a 25-yard run, and Branch connected with Lewis on a 34-yard pass. Walker capped off the drive by scoring on an 11-yard touchdown run.

The Brenham defense held the Tigers in check on the next possession. Former Burton Panther Maleek Bibby, who is now playing for the Cubs, had the big hit of the night to break up a pass play. Briley Jasinski ended the drive with an interception.

Brenham added one more touchdown on a 70-yard strike from Cooper McIntyre to Jaden Nickerson, while the Cub defense kept A&M Consolidated out of the end zone again.

After some special teams drills, the two schools rounded out the scrimmage with one full quarter that was played like a regular game.

A&M Consolidated got the ball first, and drove it down the field. The drive was temporarily kept alive on a pass interference call against Brenham. However, the Cubs would end up holding them to a 36-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

For Brenham's first drive, Branch found Markell Lewis on a long touchdown pass, and Bleu Cienega added the extra point to make it 7-3, Cubs.

Nate Rau (Melonie Rau)

The Tigers got the ball back. Their drive got extended thanks to Cub penalties for a face mask, and jumping offsides. That set up Jordan Grimes scoring on a nine-yard run, and Graham Wilke adding the extra point to make it 10-7, A&M Consolidated.

Brenham got the ball back with 2:28 left on the clock. Branch found Nate Rau on a 50-yard pass play. A short time later, Branch would hit Nickerson, who streaked to the end zone on a 35-yard touchdown reception. Bleu Cienega kicked the extra point, and the Cubs won it 14-10.

Brenham now gets ready for their season opener next Friday, August 28, as they play host to the Huntsville Hornets. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm at Cub Stadium. KWHI will have live coverage on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.

Head Coach Danny Youngs and some of the football players will be on the Brenham Sportsline this Monday night at 5:35pm, which is also on KWHI.
