FAITH MISSION SMART-CARE KIDS PROGRAM CELEBRATES 20 YEARS
The Faith Mission SMART-CARE Kids program is beginning its 20th year of serving families in Brenham ISD.
The program originated as a response to the McKinney-Vento federal law for school districts enrolling and providing service to homeless children and families.
Over the past nineteen years, the program has been deemed a state and national best practice program. The team has made presentations at the Texas Homeless Network Conference and the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth. The program serves over 30 families annually, and is funded by Faith Mission with support from Brenham Game Changers.
An integral part of the program is the Blinn Football and Athletics Mentoring Others for Ultimate Success, or B-FAMOUS.
B-FAMOUS is a one on one tutoring and mentoring program which began in the Spring of 2022. The goal of the partnership is to provide additional support to the students from Brenham ISD participating in the Science Math Art Reading Technology - Cultural Academic Recreational Enrichment, or SMART-CARE program.
Children ages 5-12 each have a “Child Champion” to assist with homework, serve as role-models, and encourage the child.
Rev. Randy Wells, Executive Director of Faith Mission and one of the originators of the program, stated, “Every child needs a champion. Someone just for them, who believes in them.”
He went on to say that their mentors supplement the everyday champions like fathers, mothers, grandmothers, uncles, and other family members.
Wells called the Blinn Athletic program a blessing as the Women’s Basketball team, Women’s Soccer team, and the Football team help out with their program throughout the year.
The program meets Mondays and Wednesdays on the Faith Mission Campus and Rev. Wells says he is excited that enrollment has been reached for 2026-27.
