BRENHAM FIRE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATES AMMONIA SMELL

No hazardous conditions were reported, as the Brenham Fire Department was called out to a local business, Monday afternoon.

The Department was dispatched for a HAZ-MAT incident at Polar Ice in the 2100 block of Longwood Drive.

Units were advised that there was a strong odor of ammonia at the location, where Polar Ice had a release of ammonia.

FD units used air monitoring equipment to monitor for hazardous condition around the exterior and interior of the building. No hazard conditions were found.

Due to the direction of the wind, dispatched received several calls from the neighborhoods in town about a strong smell of ammonia. FD sent units to each location to monitor the air. No ammonia was detected at any of the locations.

The cause of the release was an opened pop-off valve, which is under investigation. It was not known how much ammonia was released.
