CONTINUED SIGNAGE UPDATES AT BRENHAM CITY HALL THURSDAY
Brenham City officials once again met with citizens Thursday afternoon, to discuss an update to the city’s sign ordinance.
Proposed changes to the ordinance were outlined and discussed. These changes pertained to signage in the whole community, as downtown signage was talked about last week.
Assistant Development Services Director Stephanie Doland said the city has received great feedback on the first draft of the ordinance, which was submitted at the beginning of January. She said staff are working on changes to the draft, and will look to provide a second draft soon.
Some of the items being reconsidered as the ordinance moves forward are how to work open and closed signs into the ordinance, allowing multiple construction or real estate signs for larger properties, larger allotment of electronic signs, and adjusting the height and size limit of ground signs to allow for better viewing from highways.
Doland also spoke on how the ordinance would be enforced. She said the city has two part-time code enforcement officers, so there’s now somebody working on code enforcement Monday through Saturday.
Select Furnishings owner Pat Johnson said it seemed the city was working to make sure it has enough manpower to enforce the ordinance. City Councilman Keith Herring responded that city staff and councilmembers both believe the city has “been lax in a lot of areas” in enforcement.
Doland said the city will seek a recommendation from the Main Street Board next week, then from the Planning and Zoning Commission, then from a city council sub-committee. After that, Doland said the city council will review the ordinance for first reading on March 7th, and second reading and adoption on March 21st.
