7TH ANNUAL LOCAL HISTORY DAY TAKING PLACE NEXT WEEK

Seventh graders in Brenham ISD will take a step back in time Thursday, as they visit downtown Brenham for the 7th Annual Local History Day.

This learning experience helps 7th grade students understand the history of the community.  Students will take part in interactive stations related to history, business, architecture, and art.

Activities include a scavenger hunt, the creation of a chalk mural in Alamo Alley, and writing a letter from the perspective of an early settler.

Local artist and poet Lloyd Mays will share his work, as well as his story of growing up in Brenham during segregation.  Students will also watch the movie, The Dawn of Washington County, at the Barnhill Center.

The public is invited to attend the last activity of the day, the Brenham Bandits gunfight.  The historical shootout will take place from 2:10 to 2:45 p.m. on Baylor Street, at the corner of Commerce.  It tells the story of a famous Texas Ranger from Washington County, and notorious outlaws who roamed the area.

Hundreds of community volunteers annually take part in Local History Day, working in various roles.  Anyone interested in helping or learning more should contact Jennifer Eckermann at 979-337-7384, or Sharon Brass at 979-451-1459.
