FUNDING DENIED FOR WELLBORN RD./GEORGE BUSH DRIVE PROJECT IN COLLEGE STATION
Funding for a major highway project near Texas A&M has been denied by TxDOT.
The Texas Department of Transportation has turned down a funding request for an overpass and underpass at the intersection of George Bush Drive and Wellborn Road.
The project would include a new interchange that would separate traffic from the adjacent train tracks. It would also include new turn lanes and a bridge over Wellborn Road to avoid traffic signals.
The College Station project is estimated to cost $69 million.
Bryan/College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization Executive Director Dan Rudge says the state felt there was a greater need for their funds to go toward alleviating congestion on I-35 in Austin.
Officials hope to secure enough funding to begin the project by 2026. Rudge says he believes the work could become a reality by the end of the decade.
