INDEPENDENCE DAY EVENTS ALL WEEKEND LONG IN AND AROUND WASHINGTON CO.

  

Washington County and surrounding counties have a plethora of Fourth of July activities planned throughout this weekend.

Here are just a few of the events going on around the area:

FRIDAY:

• Downtown Giddings will hold the annual Grimes Street Music Fest starting at 5 p.m. on the Lee County Courthouse Square, featuring performances from the Lost Cause Band and Texas Unlimited Band.
• In downtown Navasota, the 2^nd Annual Freedom Festival will have a Fourth of July parade at 6 p.m., along with a performance from Journey tribute band Escape at 7 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

SATURDAY:

• Downtown Chappell Hill will have a full evening of activities starting at 3 p.m. with the Cool Rods Car Show.  The Chappell Hill Historical Society Museum will sell hot dogs, offer a petting zoo and feature live music from 4 to 7 p.m.  The day will conclude with a lighted parade at 7:30 p.m., including the return of the “World Famous Marching Kazoo Band.”
• Giddings will mark its 150^th anniversary during its sesquicentennial celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vendors will set up around the Lee County Courthouse Square, and there will be a short program at noon covering the city’s founding.  Giddings City Hall and the Lee County Museum at the historic Schubert-Fletcher House will also offer history tours.
• Harmonie Hall in Shelby will hold a dance with music by the Risky Liver Band from 8 p.m. to midnight.  Doors open at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $10 cash at the door, and food and snacks will be available for purchase in the kitchen.  A cash bar and set ups will also be available.  No outside drinks are allowed.

SUNDAY:

• Round Top’s 171^st Fourth of July celebration begins at 10 a.m. with remarks from local officials, followed by the firing of the town cannon, which will mark the start of the parade at 10:30 a.m.  Barbecue will be sold by plate and by the pound at the Round Top Rifle Hall starting at 11:30 a.m.  There will also be live music with the Round Top Brass Band, Round Top Jam Session and Cool Freddie and the Crew, along with a biergarten and cake walk.
• Downtown Independence will start its Fourth of July fun at 2 p.m. with a trail ride, followed by a parade at 5 p.m.  After the parade, guests can browse through food booths and enjoy a street dance with the Risky Liver Band.  The celebration will wrap up with a fireworks display at 9 p.m.
• Giddings will host championship bull riding action with “Fury on the 4^th,” beginning at 7 p.m. at the Lee County Sheriff’s Posse Arena.  Gates to the arena open at 6 p.m.  Rodeo events will include Shark Cage, Bull Poker, Kids Mutton Bustin’ and entertainment from rodeo clown Johnny “Backflip” Dudley.  Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for children 7-14 and free for children 6 and under.
• Burton American Legion Post #242 will hold a drive-thru picnic from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Burton Community Center.  Plates of pork and beef barbecue, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, bread and dessert will be sold for $15 apiece.  Tickets can be purchased at the event, and all proceeds will benefit the Burton American Legion.
• The Kenney Agricultural Society Hall will serve beef, pork and mutton meals from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  There will also be live and silent auctions, a cake walk, a drawing, refreshments, music and other entertainment throughout the day.
