An early morning traffic stop led to a gun and drug arrest for a motorist in Fayette County.

Sgt. Ryan Meagher with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office made a traffic stop on a 2016 Red Toyota Camry this (Wednesday) morning around 1am on Highway 71 West near Old Lockhart Road.

Meagher made contact with the driver, 22-year-old Romario Nathan Barrett of Austin, and observed a holster in plain view with no weapon in it and that the vehicle was occupied by three males.

Meagher asked Barrett about the weapon, and he said it was in the driver’s side door pouch.

Deputy Seth Nagel arrived to assist Sgt. Meagher, who received consent to search the Camry.

Meagher said that Barrett admitted to having marijuana inside the trunk.  When the trunk was opened, the deputies found two large bags of marijuana.

Two handguns were also found inside the vehicle.

Barrett was arrested and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center, where he was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Felony Possession of Marijuana.

The other occupants were released with the vehicle.
