FORMER ACBV DIRECTOR SENTENCED IN DISTRICT COURT

Sylvia McMullen (Brazos Co. Jail)

A former director of the Arts Council of the Brazos Valley has been convicted of credit card abuse.

69-year-old Sylvia McMullen of Bryan used an ACBV credit card to make almost $700 in purchases without the organization’s consent in December 2018.

The charges came two months after McMullen became a director. She admitted to the board and offered them her resignation. It was initially turned down.  She was later fired in January 2019.

A Brazos County jury found her guilty on one of the charges, while she reached a plea agreement with prosecution on the second charge.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, McMullen will be on probation for two years. During that time, she is not allowed to hold a position where she is authorized to make financial decisions or expenditures on behalf of another entity or individual.

McMullen will also have to perform 200 hours of community service, and pay a $1,000 fine. According to prosecutors, she had already made restitution to the Arts Council before the trial.

Prior to her time at the Arts Council, McMullen was previously the President of the Blinn College Bryan Campus from 2013-2016.
