CITY HOPEFUL FIELD TURF AT HOHLT PARK TO START BEING LAID THIS WEEK
The turfing of four fields out at Hohlt Park is getting closer to being finished.
Back in November 2023, the City of Brenham announced the closing of four fields: Schwartz, Van Dyke, Clayton, and Stark.
The closing was so that TGS Sports could replace the grass infields with turf.
That same month, the City issued TGS a $1.1 million permit to turf the field, plus make drainage and electric improvements.
According to Public Works Director Dane Rau, the below freezing temperatures from two weeks ago, and the larger than normal amount of rainfall received last week had just a minimal effect on the completion time.
The drainage and electric improvements have been completed.
Next up, the fields are scheduled to undergo streamline testing on Wednesday, and if they pass, workers can begin laying the turf down.
Rau said that the turf has arrived and is ready to go.
It is estimated that each field should take approximately three days to turf, or a total of twelve days for the four fields.
The Brenham Cubette Softball Team is hosting their annual Leadoff Classic February 15-17, and in addition to Alumni Field, each year they use the fields out at Hohlt Park for tournament.
Rau told KWHI that TGS is aware of those dates, and is willing to work into the night in order to make sure the project is done on time.
With the new playing surface, the City is hoping that it will limit rainouts, and also attract more league play and weekend tournament play to the area.
