Shortly before 12:30 p.m., a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 36 near Hay Road in Bellville for traveling 90 mph in a posted 75 mph zone.  Deputies soon learned the vehicle, a silver Volkswagen Passat, was reported stolen from Baytown that morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, the driver initially started to pull over, but then accelerated at a rapid pace in an attempt to evade arrest.  Deputies and Bellville police pursued the vehicle through town and ultimately onto Highway 159 East at a high rate of speed.

The suspect, 21-year-old Rami Idrissou, wrecked the vehicle in Hempstead after officers deployed spikes to deflate the vehicle’s tires.

Idrissou was taken into custody and charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Evading Arrest and Theft of a Motor Vehicle.  He was eventually transported to the Austin County Jail.

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Bellville Police Department, Waller County Sheriff’s Office, Hempstead Police Department and DPS.
