‘AN AFTERNOON WITH SAM HOUSTON’ JAN. 11 AT THE BARNHILL CENTER
The Washington County Historical Commission and the Visit Brenham Destination Marketing Organization invite the public to a historical re-enactment of a speech given by Sam Houston in Brenham.
“An Afternoon with Sam Houston” will take place on Saturday, January 11th at 4 p.m. at The Barnhill Center.
The event recalls a speech made by Sam Houston at the courthouse on March 31, 1861, after he had been deposed by the legislature for refusing to pledge allegiance to the new Confederacy.
Washington County Historical Commission Chair Tom Stevens came to Thursday’s Brenham City Council meeting to share excerpts from what will be read at the event. He also talked about the commission’s collaboration with City of Brenham Tourism and Marketing Director Jennifer Eckermann as part of the Smithsonian exhibit now in town.
Stevens said the idea for the re-enactment came about after the commission provided data to Eckermann to produce a historical marker guide in conjunction with the Smithsonian.
The commission went on to apply – and receive approval – for a state historical marker from the Texas Historical Commission to commemorate the speech. In August, Washington County Commissioners permitted the historical commission to place the marker on the courthouse lawn, once renovations on the courthouse square are completed next year.
Admission to the speech re-enactment is free, but RSVPs are requested at brenhamrsvp@mail.com
