Judge Douglas Cone, who has served nearly 30 years on the bench as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 2, officially declared his candidacy for county judge in the March Republican primary.

In addition to his judicial career, Cone is a Certified Master Peace Officer with over 4,100 hours of training through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.  He is also the part-owner of several family businesses, including Chappell Hill Sausage Company, 3CS Investments, CHS Farms and Brenham Repair Center.

Cone says he has gained a comprehensive, hands-on understanding of the operations and interworking of county departments through his service in county government, and that he has built strong working relationships that would allow for a smooth and effective transition into the role of county judge.

Cone says with deep roots in Washington County and broad experience in public service and private business, he will work hard to “balance the needs of our government with the limits of our taxpayers” and “ensure our community continues to thrive—without sacrificing the essential services we all depend on.”  He describes himself as a “common-sense fiscal conservative” and says he plans to listen carefully to citizens, strengthen law enforcement and support all first responders.  He concludes, “Working together, we can ensure every county office has the tools and resources needed to effectively serve the people of Washington County.”

A graduate of Brenham High School, Cone earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University.  He has maintained community involvement as a volunteer with the Washington County Fair Association, the Knights of Columbus, and the Justice of the Peace and Constables Association, where he served two terms as District 7 Director.  He was also selected by the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct to mentor other judges and is a Lifetime Member of the Houston Livestock Show Committee.  Additionally, he is a current member of the Washington County Republican Club.

Judge Cone and his wife, Tikaa, reside in Brenham.  They have two children: their daughter Rialey, who serves as Business Manager at Chappell Hill Sausage, and their son Henry, currently a pitcher in the Chicago Cubs minor league system.

Current County Judge John Durrenberger has not announced whether he will run for re-election.
