BLINN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EARNS HOME WIN OVER ANGELINA 70-59
Story by Joe Alberico, Blinn College
The Blinn College women’s basketball team battled past Angelina College 70-59 in Region 14 play Wednesday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.
Blinn (12-6, 2-0 Region 14) led the Roadrunners 30-25 at the half and outscored them 40-34 in the second to earn the victory.
The Buccaneers collected their fourth consecutive win.
“We have a four-game winning streak against quality teams, so we’re starting to play better,” Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “I still don’t think we’re quite where we need to be with our shot selection and turnovers, but we’re learning and we’re getting better. Once we get those aspects of our game figured out, I think we have the potential to be very good.”
Angelina led 12-9 after the first quarter, but the Bucs found some offensive momentum in the second.
Blinn scored the first five points of the period, including a jumper from sophomore guard Jasey Campbell that put her team in front 14-12.
Blinn endured some missed shots in the first half but got a boost from the post play of freshman forwards Kamaria “Juice” Ford, Sami'ya Mahr, and Amyah Weathersby. The trio combined for several rebounds and putback buckets.
“We just tell our shooters to keep shooting, because eventually shots will fall,” Ford said. “And if the shots don’t fall, we’ll be there for the rebound and the score.”
A 21-13 second-quarter effort sent Blinn into halftime with a five-point edge.
The Bucs outscored Angelina 24-16 in the third period to build some breathing room, highlighted by a 14-6 run late in the quarter.
The Roadrunners attempted to chip away in the fourth period and were within 54-47 in the opening minutes. Blinn sophomore guard Mariah Houston snuffed out the rally with a 3-pointer, and the Bucs led by 10 or more the rest of the way.
“We just need to keep finding ways to win because our region doesn’t get any easier,” Bucs sophomore forward Cynthia LeCompte said. “We have a ton of freshmen who are learning on the fly, so to be off to a 2-0 start is a great sign for us.”
Sophomore guard Taylor Spencer paced Blinn with 12 points, followed by 10 apiece for Ford and Houston. LeCompte and Campbell had eight apiece.
Up next for the Bucs is a region showdown against No. 16 Trinity Valley Community College at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Kruse Center. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 1:45pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
