ROAD WORK TO CLOSE BLUE BELL AQUATIC CENTER
Scheduled road work on East Tom Green Street will force the Blue Bell Aquatic Center to close during the day from Monday August 7th till Friday August 11th. The City of Brenham is scheduled to be repaving East Tom Green from Loesch Street to FM 577. That week, the Aquatic Center will be closed from 6 am to 4pm. They do plan on opening each day that week at 4pm until 7pm. The Boys and Girls Club which shares the same parking lot is also planned to be closed that week. With Brenham students going back to school on August 16, the leisure pool at the Aquatic Center will be open only on the weekends.

Blue Bell Aquatic Center is Open During Construction!
The Blue Bell Aquatic Center staff along with the City of Brenham, assessed multiple solutions to complete the necessary road work. Many people have commented with solutions that staff did consider, but ultimately the collective agreement was to close the BBAC for a period of time each day while the Public Works crew worked on the roads. This ensures the safety of the City staff and patrons traveling to and from the BBAC and its neighbor, the Boys and Girls Club. This will also ensure that the Public Works crew will have an opportunity to complete the road work before schools begin the following week. This stretch of road is very busy and beginning August 16th the bus routes will begin with the start of school.
The Blue Bell Aquatic Center including the Leisure Pool will open each day during the road construction from 4 – 7pm, so patrons will have access to all pools each day. This decision was not made lightly and the City apologizes for the inconvenience.
Why not just open and park at one of the schools and walk the 100 yards to the pool? I agree if they wanted it to work they could make it work.
Why not just make a temporary road from the back of the AC?
That’s the fastest and easiest fix so the Brenham family’s can still enjoy cooling off in the hottest part of summer break.
AC, can you please respond with a solution or are the plans etched in “stone”? LoL
Thanks, Very Simple Fix…
This makes no sense. The aquatic center was closed last summer with inside repairs. Why not schedule repairs and road construction in the winter? The leisure pool is only open for a short time and disrupting it isn’t fair to the kids. It is also unfair to the people who purchased a summer pass and can’t use it for the already limited time. Very frustrating!
Why not repave this when the Aquatic Center is closed, during the winter months? It’s only open for a few months, why close it during those months?
Makes no sense?
They can’t close those streets during the school year. It’s just one of those things that there is no good time for.
But you can cut fairly easily from Niebuhr to that parking lot, as long as there is no water in the ditch. Seems like they could make it work if they really wanted to.
the city is coordinating with the Aquatic Center, the School district, and Boys & Girls Club…3 large users of that section of road.. It would be nice to wait for the BBAC off season in the winter months, however the school district & boys & girls club is in high demand making the winter months NOT an option… August seemed to be the best option available for all parties at stake.
The Aquatic Center is open year round. Both the Junior High and High School have swim teams that practice there in the morning and afternoon in addition to regular lap swimmers and the USA club team. Only the outdoor pool closes down during the winter months.
How about paving Tom Green Street from Austin to Market; that part is very rough and the work needs to be done before school starts. School buses bounce over it on this route!
Bumpy ride, The section of Tom Green you are talking about is not a paved road. That section of Tom Green is a concrete road. You can not just lay a new layer of asphalt on top of a concrete road as the asphalt would just mimic the issues that are in the concrete. If you have driven down 290 in Waller you would see what the city would have to do to fix that section of Tom Green. They would have to rip up all of the concrete and rebar , then reset the road bed and finally lay down new asphalt.. The city has cut small sections of the concrete out and filled them in with asphalt as a way to try to fix the issues but clearly that is a band-aid and does not really fix any thing. And if you are wondering I live on that section of Tom Green and drive it every day. .
Actually Hot mix asphalt is later over concrete all the time. It greatly improves the ride quality of done correctly. And as far as waiting until winter to do the work, that’s not so easy. The hot mix is made at 325 degrees. It needs to stay hot until after compaction. In winter months it cools too rapidly causing compaction issues that ultimately lead to premature pavement failures.
Hot mix is not made in brenham. The closest plant is in Bryan. So after transporting it all the way here it would be too cold and cause problems.
That being said I don’t understand why they have to close down because of road work. In one hour they could pave the section from aquatic center entrance to 577 and be out of the way.
