A Calvert police officer died in an auto accident Wednesday morning.

Calvert’s Police Chief announced on Facebook that one of his officers, 32-year-old James Arrick Jr. of Calvert, was killed in an accident just before 3 a.m. on Wednesday, near Salado.  The accident occurred on the northbound side of Interstate 35, near the rest stops between Mile Markers 281 and 282.

State troopers at the scene said Arrick’s pickup rear-ended an 18-wheeler, and that drowsiness may have been a factor in the wreck.  Arrick died at the scene.

Arrick was a peace officer for ten years, with the last two spent with the Calvert Police Department.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, 64-year-old Juan Garcia, was not injured.  Authorities aren’t expecting charges to be filed.
