BISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING ON DISTRICT OF INNOVATION

The BISD Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing on Monday regarding the idea of becoming District of Innovation (DOI).Brenham School Board feature

A District of Innovation designation means the school district would have more local control and flexibility with certain decisions. In a previous school board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Jamey Johnson spoke of three ways the district could use a DOI status to their benefit including:

  • It would allow BISD to have a more flexible school calendar, which would include an earlier start date that could help balance the number of days in each semester
  • It would allow for more flexibility for districts to staff hard-to-fill positions. For example, the school district would be able to hire an electrical engineer who has 40 years of work experience, but is not certified as a teacher.
  • It would allow for the district to add more flexibility to teacher planning days

BISD Superintendent Walter Jackson noted in the previous meeting that they are just beginning the process of exploring what it would mean to become a DOI. He added that the board wants it to be a highly transparent and public process, with plenty of community input.

The board will also have a public meeting on the annual School “FIRST” financial accountability rating for Brenham Independent School District.

In other business, the board will hear the Superintendent District Report and an update on BISD’s strategic goals. The board will also consider a monetary donation to the district from Brenham Junior High PTO.

The school board will meet Monday at 6 p.m. in lecture rooms 111 and 113 at Brenham High School.
