CUBS OPEN QUARTERFINALS WITH 3-0 WIN

The Brenham Cubs drew first blood in front of a raucous crowd at Firemen’s Park as they took the opener of their Region III/5A Quarterfinal over Leander Rouse, 3-0.

Dane Acker, making his first start on the mound in over two weeks, dominated the Raiders’ hitters, limiting them to just four hits, while striking out five and not walking a batter.

The Cubs staked Acker (5-0) to an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning.

Darvis Watson led off with a single, and after a stolen base and thowing error, scored on Pierce Weiss’ rbi-single.  Courtesy runner Kyle Gurka made it 2-0 on Acker’s sacrifice fly.

Acker made that 2-0 lead hold up as he continually got ahead of the Raiders’ hitters, limiting Rouse to just one runner as far as second base.

Brenham added an insurance run in the sixth, when Davion Lockett doubled with one out.  Lockett would race home on Darvis Watson’s rbi-single—his third hit of the evening.

The Cubs can close out the best-of-three series with a win tonight in Leander.

Game two gets underway at 5:00, with game three—if necessary—to follow.  The pre-game show is set for 4:30 on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
