BLINN GIVES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OPPORTUNITY TO SHINE AT UIL COMPETITIONS

Each year, thousands of high school students come to Blinn College to test their abilities at University Interscholastic League competitions.

Thanks to the efforts of Blinn faculty and staff, these students have a place to showcase their talents each and every year.

This year Blinn is hosting an academic competition, a one-act play and golf scheduled for Region III-AAA. An academics competition and one-act play will be for Region IV-A April 24-25. For each event, Blinn will host teachers, coaches, administrators and parents throughout the weekend of competition.

“Our campus’s long tradition of community service continues as we bring together thousands of students for a weekend competition,” said Mark Bernier, regional meet director. “We are pleased to be part of a prestigious program that brings out the best among academically-minded high school students.”

Approximately 24 Blinn College faculty and staff contribute about three hours each academic competition day. Additionally, the College relies on services from maintenance to food services.

Competitions in the academic side range from debate, calculator applications and poetry interpretation. The one-act play contest gives students a chance to show their ability on stage.

The UIL competitions have become an annual tradition at the 131-year-old Brenham campus.

“UIL is an extremely important part of the culture of Blinn,” said Dennis Crowson, vice president of student services. “Thousands of high school students visit the campus each year and many return as Blinn students.”
