BLINN BAND CONCERT TO FEATURE SOLO PERFOMANCE FROM BRENHAM STUDENT

Students from Brenham and Orange will be showcased with solo performances during a concert by the Blinn College symphonic band and wind symphony on Sunday, Feb 28.

The symphonic band and wind symphony will collaborate for a free performance at 5 p.m. at the Dr. W.W. O’Donnell Performing Arts Center (map) in Brenham. Dr. Sarah Burke and Dr. Kendall Prinz will serve as conductors.

“This concert will have music ranging from fast and furious to slow and pretty songs,” Burke said. “The 90-minute show will have a little bit of everything.”

Two students will be featured as soloists as Eric Pierce (Orange) will play “Pequeña Czarda” on the alto saxophone and Daniel Ward (Brenham) will play “Adagio and Tarantella” on the clarinet. Pierce was the winner of the Texas Community College Band Directors Association concerto competition and recently played with the all-state band in San Antonio at the Texas Music Educators Convention. Ward was the winner of the Blinn College concerto competition.

“Coming out to the band concert is an excellent way to show support for the band students,” Burke said.

In total, 28 Blinn students were selected to participate in the all-state band performance in the Texas Community College Band Directors Association Symphonic and Jazz Bands performance in San Antonio. Students had to send in auditions to be considered for the all-state band, as it gives students an opportunity to play with world-renowned conductors and get recruited by four-year schools.

The Blinn Music Department offers small classes, one-on-one attention, practical learning and a dedicated faculty so students are actively engaged in a superior learning environment. The department is part of Blinn’s Division of Visual/Performing Arts & Kinesiology, which offers programs in arts, architecture, communication studies, kinesiology, music and theatre arts.
