Washington County Court at Law Judge Matthew Reue is retiring, effective July first.

Judge Reue says he has “reached a point where I would like to take advantage of other opportunities and spend more time with his children before—in his words, “they completely fly the nest.”

The chairs of the respective political parties and the county commissioners were notified in May of Judge Reue's plans in order to give them an opportunity to place a candidate on the ballot for the November general election, and to appoint someone to serve beginning July 1st.

County Clerk Beth Rothermel says it will be up to the County Commissioners Court to appoint an interim judge to serve the position – or they could vote to use visiting judges in the post.

Rothermel says she’s not sure which way the commissioners are leaning.  The commissioners are out of town, at a commissioner’s court conference this week and County Judge John Brieden is currently out of town.

County Democrats Chair George Dillingham says his party does not have a candidate for the November ballot as of yet, but says they will have someone ready by the August 29th deadline.

Former Washington County Republican Chair Helen Hink says the party’s executive committee will be holding an open meeting tonight at Blinn College, where three candidates will be interviewed individually, then a candidate chosen.  The meeting will be in the Blinn Student  Center at 5:30.

Judge Reue was the first judge in the area to establish a “For Kid’s Sake” program.  Every parent who files for divorce must complete this program designed to help parents work together to lessen the impact of divorce on their children.

He also initiated and oversaw a Juvenile Boot Camp for several years which was a cooperative effort between Washington County, the City of Brenham, and the Brenham School District.

A retirement celebration will be held at Home Sweet Farm on July 1st from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, with BBQ and music being provided free of charge by friends of Judge Reue.
