CITY ORDERS MUSEUM EVACUATED

The city of Brenham has ordered the Brenham Heritage Museum be completely closed down due to safety concerns.

Doug Price

Museum Executive Director Douglas Price had been given notice that the city wants the facility closed down completely due to safety hazards due to damage to the electrical system.

The building has been closed to the public since flooding back in May of last year, but it was still open for business operations.

According to City Attorney Cary Bovey, an electrical engineer performing a study for the museum expressed safety concerns, which led to the directive to evacuate the building.

Price says the everyday operations of the museum will be moved to the recently opened Brenham Bus Depot, which is owned by the museum.

Brenham City Manager Terry Roberts said architectural estimates put damage repairs at about $750,000.

Roberts said the lease agreement reached in 1991 makes the museum responsible for all the building’s upkeep, meaning the city is not liable for making any improvements or repairs.  However, he did add that the city may be willing to help out.
