LEMAN SAYS NO VIOLATION OF ELECTION LAW

Ben Leman

Some residents of Grimes County are questioning former county judge and current state congressional candidate Ben Leman violated state elections laws.

Leman spoke, along with several county sheriffs, during a Thursday news conference outside the Grimes County courthouse, concerning the Texas High Speed Rail project.

Leman is the chairman of a group actively opposing the project that would connect Houston to Dallas.

During Thursday's news conference Leman used a loudspeaker to voice his thoughts on the project.  The state's election code says political candidates are not allowed to electioneer or use a loudspeaker within 1000 feet of a polling place.

Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell helped to organize the event, and said there was no intention to violate the law or try to disturb early voters.

Leman says he does not believe he violated the law because his speech contained no campaign material, and he mentioned nothing about his run for office.

  1. Ben Lehman should know better than this. At a polling place, during early voting, you should avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Especially during an election in which you are a candidate on the ballot and while the polls are open no less.
