Gilbert Janner

Funeral services will be held Sunday for former Washington County Commissioner and community activist Gilbert Janner, who died Wednesday, at the age of 89.

Janner, who served as Precinct One commissioner from 1984-96, was extremely influential in the push for paved county roads, as well as the construction of the Washington County EMS on Blue Bell Road, and a new county jail.  He also pushed for a refurbishing program at the courthouse and the sales facility at the county fairgrounds.

A lifelong resident of Washington County, Janner was involved with a number of civic and agriculture organizations.  He was chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Services board, president of the Washington County Fair Association, and assisted when the Houston Livestock Show’s swine sift was held in Brenham.

Janner also performed several board and committee assignments with the Washington County Farm Bureau as a director, Concepts of Care, Washington County Soil District and Wildlife Society, Brazos Valley Development Council, and the Texas Pork Producers Association.

Janner was a recipient of the Jefferson Jackson Award from the Washington County Democratic Club, and was chosen for Blinn College’s Hall of Honor in 2008.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 1st at 2 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Luther Church of Prairie Hill.  Visitation is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) evening from 5-7 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel.
