A longtime community figure of Brenham died Thursday in an auto accident.

Nina Hopkins, former Washington County Woman of the Year, was killed in a crash shortly after noon on Highway 21 on the west side of Bryan, near the intersection of Highway 47.  She was 75 years old.

DPS troopers say Hopkins, headed east in an SUV, made a left turn from the shoulder into the path of an oncoming 18-wheeler, which was in the lane next to the median.  It was then that her vehicle was struck by the 18-wheeler.

Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to CHI St. Joseph in Bryan by ambulance, with undetermined injuries.

Highway 21’s eastbound lanes were closed for nearly five hours as DPS conducted its investigation, along with the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office.

Nina worked with her husband, the late Mike Hopkins, for many years at Mike Hopkins Distributing.  The two were married for nearly 40 years.  She was an avid volunteer with Brenham public schools and Maifest, as well as St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.  She was also on the Board of the Washington on the Brazos State Park Association, for more than ten years.

Funeral arrangements for Nina Hopkins are pending at this time.
