A new book features Brenham in its exploration of how people can overcome differences to find common ground.

“Divided We Stand”, authored by Bill Newcott and published by Compass Rose Publishing, examines the inhabitants of cities, towns and states across North America and how they, despite at times appearing incompatible with matters like politics or religion, are able to come together as neighbors, friends and loved ones.

Newcott’s focus on Brenham highlights the pride Texans have for their state and their local communities and notes how their ability to bridge gaps can serve as a model for the whole country to strive toward.

Newcott also acknowledges through his conversations locally that as Houston and Austin push inward, Brenham’s identity is transforming, but in some ways is also being reinforced.

Sharing their stories and personal anecdotes in the chapter about Brenham are Renee Mueller and Jill Finke, owners of the Vintage Southern Comfort bed and breakfast; former Brenham Police Chief Lloyd Powell; and Washington County Sheriff Trey Holleway.

“Divided We Stand” can be ordered at The Book Nook in Brenham, as well as through other outlets online.
