CANDIDATES SPEAK AT FIRST FORUM OF 2019
The Cannery Kitchen in Brenham was home to the first candidates’ forum of the political season Monday night.
Incumbent Mayor Milton Tate and Ward 4 Councilmember Danny Goss attended the forum, along with respective challengers Dorothy Morgan and Adonna Saunders.
Also in attendance were unopposed Ward 2 Councilmember Albert Wright and Blinn board candidate Dr. Dennis Crowson. Dr. Crowson is running for At-Large Position 3 against H.F. Poehlmann, who was not at the forum.
Candidates spoke on the economic status of the city, what it needs to do to draw in new businesses, the importance of downtown Brenham, and what Blinn College means to Brenham.
Morgan, former Brenham Mayor and Washington County Judge, commended Tate for his service as mayor, but said she thinks it’s time for a positive change for the changing community.
Tate, who has been the mayor of Brenham since 2003, said the city has maintained a stable government, and is looking to make steps toward continued growth and rebuilding.
Saunders, owner of A Wild Hair salon in Brenham, talked about the importance of bringing in new business opportunities and keeping talented youth in Brenham.
Goss, first elected to the city council in 2005, talked about the city’s efforts to bring in new retail growth.
Dr. Crowson spoke on the importance of Blinn to Brenham, and stressed his goal of keeping students as the school's top priority.
Wright, appointed to the council last year after the passing of Weldon Williams, said his time on the council so far has been quite a learning experience, and maintained that he is not just representing Ward 2, but all of Brenham.
The forum was put on by the Citizens for Community Progress and the Brenham Activist Association, as part of their Black History Month events.
Election Day is May 4th. Early voting begins April 22nd.
