DPS: HIGHWAY 290 AUTO-PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT NEAR HEMPSTEAD FATAL

  

Update @ 4:15 p.m.: Authorities continue to investigate after a fatal auto-pedestrian accident this (Monday) morning on Highway 290, outside of Hempstead.

DPS Sergeant Stephen Woodard said that around 5:45 a.m., an 18-wheeler with a trailer was driving eastbound on Highway 290, just east of FM 1736 near the Legendary Oaks Golf Course.

According to Woodard, a pedestrian, identified as 79-year-old William Hill of Hempstead, was walking on the highway, close to the center of the outside eastbound lane.  The driver of the 18-wheeler tried to take evasive action, but was unable to avoid hitting Hill, who was struck by the left fender of the vehicle.

Hill was pronounced dead at the scene.  No charges will be filed against the driver of the 18-wheeler.

 

Update @ 12:40 p.m.: Authorities continue to investigate after a fatal auto-pedestrian accident this (Monday) morning on Highway 290, outside of Hempstead.

DPS Sergeant Stephen Woodard said that around 6 a.m., a pedestrian was reportedly struck by a vehicle west of the Highway 6 interchange at Highway 290 East and Urban Road, near the Legendary Oaks Golf Course.

Highway 290 traffic is flowing normally after being cut down to one lane for several hours.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

 

Original Story @ 7:02 a.m.: Traffic is backed up this (Monday) morning on Highway 290 outside of Hempstead after an auto-pedestrian accident.

DPS Sergeant Stephen Woodard said authorities are currently investigating west of the Highway 6 interchange at Highway 290 East and Urban Road, near the Legendary Oaks Golf Course.  Authorities say a pedestrian was reportedly struck by a vehicle at around 6 a.m.

Drivers on Highway 290 should expect delays.

  1. I am not sure what makes a pedestrian think it is a good idea to be on 290, it is very dangerous! Drivers don’t expect pedestrians on 290 and tend to react poorly when they encounter them. Please for your own safety, stay off of busy roads like 290.

    1. He lived there. He walked or crossed that road for many many many years. He was a twin and my twin nieces are his granddaughters. Many ppl would give him a ride. I don’t know exactly what happened but I’m shocked that he tried to cross if traffic was really really busy.
