COVID-19 CASES IN WASHINGTON CO. SLIGHTLY UP FROM LAST WEEK

As the first week of classes for Brenham ISD wraps up and storm evacuees head back home, Washington County’s COVID-19 case count remains similar to that of a week ago.

As of today (Friday), according to the Washington County Joint Information Center, the county is reporting 560 positive cases, 55 active cases, 462 recoveries, and 44 deaths.  Those are increases of seven positive cases, four active cases, 28 recoveries, and three deaths from last Friday, according to county data.

Information from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) tells a slightly different story, listing 50 active cases and 466 recoveries for the county as of Thursday.  According to DSHS, the county has performed a cumulative total of 4,298 COVID-19 tests.

County Judge John Durrenberger said the community has welcomed educators and students back to school with “great success”.  He said the community also welcomed travelers this week as they sought shelter from Hurricane Laura.  He said local leaders and hotel partners worked closely with each other to ensure guests had the necessary information to follow state and local health recommendations.

Brenham Mayor Milton Tate said the city provided hand sanitizer stations at area hotels to help keep residents and travelers safe and healthy.

Durrenberger said just because there was a weather event does not mean the pandemic has gone away.  He said public officials and community leaders are “committed to keeping Washington County safe”.
