CUB FOOTBALL DROPS OPENER TO MAGNOLIA WEST
The Brenham Cubs kicked off the long-awaited 2020 season Friday night, on the short end of a 49-28 loss to Magnolia West.
After the Mustangs took the opening drive downfield for a 6-0 lead, Javon Dixon took the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a 7-6 lead.
With the Cubs trailing 20-7 in the second quarter, quarterback Stephen Stackhouse fired a 22-yard scoring pass to Cam Richardson to cut the lead to 20-14. The Cubs then took the lead with 4:12 left in the half, when Dixon scored on a seven-yard run.
The Cubs were trying to extend their lead right before the half, when Stackhouse was intercepted by Jackson Blank, who returned the pass for a touchdown and a 28-21 lead for the Mustangs at the half.
Magnolia West tailback Hunter Bilbo extended the lead with a third quarter one-yard run.
Bilbo (153 yds.) would extend the West lead to 49-21 with two more scoring runs in the fourth quarter, giving him four TD’s on the night.
Adan Villatoro would close out the scoring for the Cubs, with a 60-yard touchdown reception from Stackhouse with just over 2:00 left.
Coach Eliot Allen said “We’ve got a lot to work on. We showed a lot of places that need work over the next few weeks, but we also saw some good things from our guys.”
“We’ve got a lot of players going both ways and they’ll need to work on their stamina. Magnolia West was huge and it wore us down a little bit.
The Cubs will hit the road for week two, when they travel to Magnolia High School for next Friday’s game with the Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 7:00 with the pregame at 6:30 on AM 1280 KWHI, FM 101.7 and www.kwhi.com.
