SNOOK ISD SUSPENDING REMOTE LEARNING; CALDWELL ISD EVALUATING ON “CASE-BY-CASE BASIS”

Two Burleson County school districts are changing how they handle remote learning.

Last week, Snook ISD announced the suspension of remote learning across all campuses effective tomorrow (Friday).  All students in the district will need to be on campus for instruction on or before Tuesday, October 13th.

In a notice to parents, Snook ISD Superintendent Brenda Krchnak said remote learning has been suggested to families concerned about returning to school due to COVID-19, but after reviewing data from the first six-week grading period, the approach “has not been successful for most students.”

The only exceptions made will be for students who are told to quarantine by the school district or public health department due to close contact exposures, a positive test result for COVID-19, or students with documented medical concerns.  Snook ISD administrators say they are discussing alternative options with remote learners and their families if they have safety concerns.

Meanwhile, Caldwell ISD Superintendent Andrew Peters said the district is looking at remote instruction on a “case-by-case basis.”  He said about 50 percent of remote students districtwide were failing at the end of the first grading period, mainly due to not turning in work.

The district asked those students to return to in-person instruction, and, according to Peters, about 75 percent of those students have done so.  The roughly 200 students that were successful in at-home learning are still learning remotely.

Peters said COVID-19 cases within the district remain low, but in order for the district to accept any new at-home learners, it would need evidence of the student or someone in the student’s family with a serious health issue that could be impacted by a potential spread of COVID-19.
