VETERANS HONORED IN RADIO-ONLY VETERANS DAY PROGRAM

Ben Seeker

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, veterans from around the area were still recognized for their service this Veterans Day.

Ben Seeker, Commander of James F. Dillon VFW Post 7104, President of the Washington County Veterans Association, and a member of the Brenham Honor Guard, was the guest speaker for today’s (Wednesday) radio-only Veterans Day program on KWHI.  Seeker talked about what it means to be a veteran in Washington County, and recounted some of his experiences as a veteran and leader of veteran organizations.

Seeker recalled his experience with the creation of the Veterans Memorial Plaza at Fireman’s Park, as well as the plaza’s dedication on Memorial Day in 2002.

Seeker also remembered the support shown by the community for a homeless Vietnam War veteran who passed away in Brenham in November 2019.  Through help from the public, enough money was raised to not only give the veteran full military honors, but also help the veteran’s family and create a relief fund to support other veterans.

Several local dignitaries gave addresses thanking the military’s men and women for their service, including Washington County Judge John Durrenberger, Brenham Mayor Milton Tate, Burton Mayor David Zajicek, State Representative Ben Leman, and State Senator Lois Kolkhorst.

The Veterans Day program was organized by the combined veterans organizations of Washington County.

  1. I already commented on the subject of Commander Seeker stepping down about his speech so I will not repeat those words in this comment. However, I would like to add to it by praising, as he did in his speech, the residents and businesses in Brenham and Washington County for getting things done through fundraising events. The support the people have for the organizations that work hard to hold events is outstanding and cannot be matched by many other cities or towns.

I moved away from Brenham almost 8 years ago and that is one of the many things I miss about home. I’m not saying that the city I live in now, doesn’t support the needs of people, but it’s done a way different way. Don’t take your events lightly , they are second to none.
