WORK UNDERWAY TO RESTORE BRICKS AT BRENHAM AMERICAN LEGION MEMORIAL PLAZA

The bricks at the Brenham American Legion Memorial Plaza are being restored by Janda Monument Company and Cemetery Services of Giddings.

Around 3,000 bricks honoring local veterans at the Brenham American Legion Memorial Plaza will soon be given new life.

The Washington County Veterans Association (WCVA) is working with Janda Monument Company and Cemetery Services of Giddings to revitalize the bricks and columns at the plaza.  Work began this week to restore the bricks, which are inscribed with the names of veterans but have faded over time.

WCVA President Ben Seeker said it is important to never forget veterans and their legacy.

Workers spray washed the bricks on Monday, and will be back next week to “blacken” the bricks, filling in the faded lettering on them.  They will then scrape off the excess blackening and spray a coating onto the bricks.

Over the years, the lettering on many of the bricks at the plaza has faded. The bricks were spray washed on Monday.

Many of the bricks date back to when the plaza was dedicated on Memorial Day in 2002.

Seeker said the project is being funded by the WCVA, and estimates the cost at around $8,000.  He said completion of the project ultimately depends on weather conditions.

Seeker said anyone with a veteran in their family who has ties to Washington County can have a brick at the plaza.  To receive a brick, they can contact Washington County Veterans Service Officer Eric Posern or one of the commanders of the local veterans organizations.
