BLINN PERFORMING ARTS MEMBERS TO PRESENT ‘LES ANIMAUX’
Live recital to be held Thursday via Zoom
Two Blinn College District Performing Arts Department members will present a musical celebration of “critters” at a live recital on Thursday, March 11.
“Les Animaux: A Night of French Mélodies Celebrating Critters Large and Small” will feature Dr. Daniel Johnson, lyric baritone; and Dr. Jayoung Hong, pianist. Dr. Johnson is on the faculty of the Performing Arts Department, and Dr. Hong is a staff accompanist.
The free 7 p.m. recital via Zoom will include works by Francis Poulenc, Emmanuel Chabrier, and other noted composers. The link is available by contacting Dr. Johnson at daniel.johnson@blinn.edu.
“The recital features two song cycles about animals that I have learned before – one by Poulenc and one by Chabrier,” Dr. Johnson said, “but there is also a very famous song cycle about animals by Ravel that I have been meaning to learn for years. These three formed the basis for putting the music together, and the theme basically took care of itself from there.”
Dr. Johnson, Professor of Voice and Choir, joined Blinn in January 2019. He assists with the choral and music theory programs while maintaining a thriving private voice studio. He lives in Washington, Texas, with his wife Adele and their three sons.
Dr. Johnson is well-known for his concert work. He presented “An Evening of Mahler” featuring three orchestral song cycles by 19th-Century composer Gustav Mahler at Blinn in November 2019 and at University of the Incarnate Word in January 2020.
Dr. Hong is an award-winning pianist who has performed across the world at venues throughout Asia, North America, and Europe.
She has had solo performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.; Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York City; the Royal Festival Hall in London; Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, South Korea; and at Taipei National Hall in Taiwan.
