‘FINN’ NAMED PET OF THE WEEK

The Brenham Pet Adoption Center has named “Finn” as its Pet of the Week.

Finn was adopted as a puppy, but came back to the shelter after having some difficulties in his new home.  He has been evaluated by a trainer since returning to the shelter, and Brenham Animal Services staff say they are hoping through further training at sleepaway camp that he will display better manners to humans and fellow dogs.

Staff say Finn is assertive, tending to become a bully with smaller dogs and playing too roughly; however, the trainer believes this can be corrected with learned, healthy play.  Staff say his boundaries are blurry with larger adult dogs, so learning how to coexist with them is another aspect of training that will boost his confidence.

Because of resource guarding—protecting things like food, bones and favorite toys—Finn’s ideal home would include older children who can help him learn that he can enjoy his favorite things without fearing they will disappear.  Finn has proven to have no adverse reaction to cats, horses and chickens.

Finn is now five months old.  His mom was a Golden Retriever mix, and his dad was a larger breed such as a Pyrenees.  Once the shelter has a foster or permanent home for Finn, staff will arrange for him to attend two weeks of stay and train before going to his new home.  The cost of training will be covered through donations made to the shelter.

Anyone interested in adopting or fostering a pet can see the shelter’s available pets online at www.petfinder.com.  Appointments to meet a pet can be made by calling 979-337-7351, or by visiting the Brenham Animal Services Facebook page.  The shelter is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
