WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS OK SPEED REDUCTIONS FOR SECTIONS OF STRANGMEIER ROAD, NIXON LAKE ROAD

County Engineer Ross McCall presents speed reduction proposals for two county roads at Tuesday's meeting of Washington County Commissioners.

Washington County Commissioners approved speed reductions to portions of two county roads at their meeting today (Tuesday).

After a pair of public hearings with no comment, commissioners approved requests to reduce the speed limits from the unposted 60 mph standard to 35 mph on Strangmeier Road in Precinct 3 and on Nixon Lake Road in Precinct 4.  The speed reduction on Strangmeier Road applies from Highway 36 to North Berlin Road, while the reduction for Nixon Lake Road is from Highway 290 to Sandtown Road.

County Engineer Ross McCall explains the county’s process for setting speed limits.

McCall said his office received petitions indicating public support for the speed reductions on both county roads.  He said the speed limit for Strangmeier Road will act as a transition between the existing 30 and 40 mph zones in the area, while the speed limit on Nixon Lake Road should help with heavy truck traffic.

The new speed limits will become effective once signs are posted and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office is notified.

Also at today’s meeting, commissioners approved:

  • An order granting discretionary exemptions for contract purchasing for a generator for the Washington County Sheriff’s facility. Commissioners then approved the purchase of a natural gas generator from Zenith Power Systems for $335,286.
  • Election services contracts between the county, the City of Brenham and Brenham ISD.
  • A subdivision variance request for a land division fronting Wauls Legion Road in Precinct 3.
  • Naming a private lane in Precinct 3 as Westpoint Lane.
  • The total project cost from ECM for the Engineering and Development Services facility. McCall said the final cost of the facility was $5,843,051.
  • A 60 day extension of 36.75 excess vacation hours for Cathy Fritz with the Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Office.
