The two-day course was held last month and taught by retired police chief Mike Gentry, director of training for the Texas Police Chiefs Association.  The program covered organizational leadership and health, courage and character.

Gentry actively served more than 40 years in law enforcement, including five years with the Brenham Police Department and 27 years as the Harker Heights police chief.  He has presented leadership training across the United States for the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas, the Texas Police Chiefs Association, the Penn State University Justice and Safety Institute, the Michigan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Brenham Police Chief Ron Parker said the topics and training received during this program will “enable the department’s leadership team to be better prepared for current and future risks, concerns, police reform and community challenges.”

Parker said this training will become an annual event for the department’s leadership team.  He said in addition to policy amendments, the creation of a citizens advisory board, and working to gain mental health certifications for all officers, this training will “help better prepare our police leaders to address such concerns and to better serve our citizens.”

  1. Please get the constables office some training like this….goodness knows one of them could use it…it’s not necessary to call bpd to back you up on a civil complaint while you handle your firearm while approaching a citizen cutting grass..,kind of makes you think, one act of riculoussness rubs off on everyone..The constable apologized and explained that he just wanted to make it home each night ..I get that….but I was at my home where I should feel safe…BPD is really sharp…! Get those constables in class too!

    1. I agree. If you Google the subject you’ll see the amount of police training required of Texas constables is next to nothing.
