Washington County fire officials are not recommending a burn ban at this time.

Dry conditions have had firefighters around the county busy over the past week responding to grass fires, vehicle fires and structure fires.

Washington County Firefighters Association President and Meyersville Volunteer Fire Chief Alan Winkelmann said his most recent poll of the county’s fire chiefs indicated they are not in favor of a burn ban just yet.  He said a decision will likely depend on how this week’s weather forecast plays out.

So far this month, the City of Brenham has measured 0.22 inches of rain.

Winkelmann said while the number of fire calls is up, few of them have been a result of controlled burns that got out of hand.  He said he is in the process of taking another poll of local fire officials and will continue to communicate their input to the county judge to determine whether a burn ban is necessary.

As of today (Monday), 58 of the state’s 254 counties have implemented burn bans.  In the area, that includes Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes and Waller counties.
