The Burton FFA Livestock Judging Team is preparing for national competition this week.

The team of Chet Fritsch, Waylon Hinze, Weston Hinze and Tanna Thiel has traveled to Indianapolis for the 94th National FFA Convention and Expo’s Livestock Contest.  Coached by Nicholas Herr, the team placed first at the Texas State FFA Livestock Competition in April.

The team will practice and have a virtual orientation meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at Purdue University.  The college will have a walk-through contest for all of the nationally qualifying teams.

During the contest on Wednesday, contestants will evaluate a total of 12 classes and give four sets of oral reasons.  Of the 12 classes, nine will be the standard ranking of four animals, ranging from a combination of livestock.  One of the nine classes will be performance breeding heifers or breeding gilts that will also be a reasons class.  Reasons will be given on a cattle, swine and sheep class with the final set of reasons given on the performance heifer or gilt class.  The remaining three of the 12 classes will be keep/cull, selecting which four of eight animals to keep and which four to cull.

Award recognition will be on Thursday at 9 a.m., with the main stage recognition at 6 p.m. during the third general session of the convention at Lucas Oil Stadium.  The top four teams and top ten individuals will be recognized.
